Social Services:Any of various professional activities or methods concerned with providing social services (such as investigatory and treatment services or material aid) to disadvantaged, distressed, or vulnerable persons or groups. The field originated in the charity organizations in Europe and the U.S. in the late 19th century. The training of volunteer workers by these organizations led directly to the founding of the first schools of social work and indirectly to increased government responsibility for the welfare of the disadvantaged. 1. Food stamps
2. free healthcare
3. workforce programs- programs that help people get jobs.
4. low-income housing, where government helps poor people get homes.
5. Disability
6. Child abuse prevention programs
7. Free family counseling and free family planning organizations.
Some of these are better than others, but these should give you an idea about what can fit under the definition of social service and how wide the topic is next year.
Defending my position: I put these social services down because they are very common social services that we all hear about and they fit the definition. Also the definition is one that the commonman can understand so it keeps debate simple and avoids confusion.
Poverty: I will not define poverty from dictionaries, instead, I'll do it from my own thoughts and views. Poverty is the extreme lack of something. Mostly though, poverty connotes the lack of money, luxuries and basic needs.
